Daily Screen Habits

At the beginning of this study, I figured that being in the middle of a pandemic and being stuck home would have caused a large spike in the amount of time I spend on my phone. I was wrong, however, and found that my time spent on my devices has decreased significantly. This week alone, my daily screen time decreased by 15%.

On average, I spend approximately 3 hours and 39 minutes on my device a day. Of that, my most used app is Snapchat, with an average of 3 hours and 56 minutes a week. Following this is Instagram with 3 hours and 44 minutes, and messenger with 3 hours and 36 minutes. On a weekly basis, I spend approximately 12 hours and 46 minutes on social channels, followed by 2 hours and 50 minutes on productivity and finance channels, and 1 hour and 16 minutes focusing on entertainment.

As I previously mentioned, the results of this study surprised me quite a lot. So many people that I have spoken with have told me about how much time they spend looking at a screen every day, not even counting the many hours spent looking at a screen for classes and work. I do believe, however, that if the hours spent on classes counted into this (I do not use my phone for classes), my hours spent looking at a screen would be far greater than the numbers presented above.

Another surprising aspect of the study was the number of pickups that I have daily. My daily average for pickups is 130, which compared to the average 200 notifications a day I receive, I consider that to be good. Of the 336 weekly notifications I receive from messenger, the number of times that messenger is the first used app when I pick up my phone is 169.

Overall, I was quite surprised at the results of this study. I am both impressed with my ability to limit the time I spend looking at a screen and interested as to how little time I spend looking on a daily basis.
